Intraneural Stimulation using Wire-Microelectrode Arrays: Analysis of Force Steps in Recruitment Curves
نویسنده
چکیده
In acute experiments on six Wistar rats, a wiremicroelectrode array was inserted into the common peroneal nerve. A 5-channel array and a 24-channel array were available. Each electrode in the array was used to generate a twitch contraction force recruitment curve for the extensor digitorum Longus muscle. We constructed a histogram of the pooled force steps in all recruitment curves. From a comparison of this experimental histogram with one estimated from literature data, we found that the force steps encountered in our experiments are in the same range as those from the literature-based estimated distribution. Discrepancies between the experimental and the literature-based histogram might be ascribed to an approximation used in the estimated distribution. We conclude that force step histograms appear to provide a simple means for estimating motor unit twitch force distributions, and thus are of value in studies of intraneural selective stimulation.

Endoneural selective stimulating using wire-microelectrode arrays.
In acute experiments eight 5- to 24-wire-microelectrode arrays were inserted into the common peroneal nerve of the rat, to investigate whether the electrodes could selectively stimulate motor units of the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle. Twitch-force-recruitment curves were measured from the EDL for each array electrode. The curves were plotted on a double-logarithmic scale and parameter...
متن کاملImproved Focalization of Electrical Microstimulation Using Microelectrode Arrays: A Modeling Study
Extracellular electrical stimulation (EES) of the central nervous system (CNS) has been used empirically for decades, with both fundamental and clinical goals. Currently, microelectrode arrays (MEAs) offer new possibilities for CNS microstimulation. However, although focal CNS activation is of critical importance to achieve efficient stimulation strategies, the precise spatial extent of EES rem...
متن کاملMulti-electrode arrays technology for the non-invasive recording of neural signals: a review article
The recording of electrophysiological activities of brain neurons in the last half-century has been considered as one of the effective tools for the development of neuroscience. One of the techniques for recording the activity of nerve cells is the multi-electrode arrays (MEAs). Microelectrode arrays (MEAs) are usually employed to record electrical signals from electrogenic cells like neurons o...
متن کاملConductance in quantum wires by three quantum dots arrays
A noninteracting quantum-dot arrays side coupled to a quantum wire is studied. Transport through the quantum wire is investigated by using a noninteracting Anderson tunneling Hamiltonian. The conductance at zero temperature develops an oscillating band with resonances and antiresonances due to constructive and destructive interference in the ballistic channel, respectively. Moreover, we have fo...

We present the first in vitro extracellular stimulation of individual neurons from dissociated cultures with iridium oxide (IrO(x)) electrodes. Microelectrode arrays with sputtered IrO(x) films (SIROF) were developed for electrophysiological investigations with electrogenic cells. The microelectrodes were characterized with scanning electron and atomic force microscopy, revealing rough and poro...
